La primera evacuación de su bebé no tiene mal olor. Eso se debe a que el material de color negro, de aspecto alquitranado, llamado meconio, es estéril. Una vez los intestinos no hayan sido colonizados por bacterias, no hay nada que haga que el popó huela mal. Sin embargo, no haga alarde de que el popó de su bebé no huele mal puesto que, la colonización bacteriana inicia con la primera alimentación. De hecho, algunos bebés evacuarán el meconio estando aún en el útero, por lo general como resultado de estrés fisiológico como una infección o un parto difícil. Cuando esto ocurre, el bebé corre el riesgo de contraer una enfermedad pulmonar que se conoce como síndrome de aspiración de meconio. Su recién nacido probablemente tendrá su primera evacuación durante las primeras 24 horas de vida. Cuando las deposiciones tardan más, los médicos buscan problemas tales como obstrucciones intestinales, un ano subdesarrollado o materia fecal que ha no se ha podido evacuar, lo cual se conoce como un tapón de meconio.
Su recién nacido continuará evacuando meconio durante el primer día o más tiempo, pero si se está alimentando bien, notará que en pocos días las evacuaciones cambian de color, de negro a verde oscuro a amarillo. Los bebés amamantados suelen evacuar popó que se parece a la mostaza Dijon, acuosa con pequeños trozos blanquecinos parecidos a semillas. Los bebés alimentados con leche de fórmula pueden tener evacuaciones menos acuosas, por lo general de consistencia pastosa y de color amarillo o marrón. Muchos padres se preocupan si ven que las evacuaciones son verdes en lugar de amarillas. A decir verdad, todos los tonos tierra están bien, de amarillo a verde a marrón.
Cuándo llamar al médico
Hay 2 colores de evacuaciones que no deben darse. Uno es blanco. Las evacuaciones de color arcilla pueden ser un signo de enfermedad grave del hígado. El otro es rojo. Aunque la sangre en las evacuaciones de un bebé puede simplemente ser el resultado de haber tragado sangre durante el parto o por sangrado de los pezones de la mamá, siempre es bueno que el médico revise al bebé.
