La enfermedad renal crónica es una pérdida progresiva e irreversible de las funciones renales, como consecuencia los riñones pierden su capacidad para eliminar desechos, concentrar la orina y conservar los electrolitos en la sangre, hecho que podría alterar seriamente procesos importantes del cuerpo entre los que se incluye la actividad muscular, cantidad de agua en el cuerpo y el pH de la sangre, entre otras.
En otras palabras, la ERC se produce lentamente durante muchos años, existen casos referenciados donde no se presenta ningún síntoma hasta que está muy avanzada la enfermedad, el tratamiento puede incluir medicamentos para bajar la presión arterial, controlar la glucosa en la sangre y bajar los niveles de colesterol.
Usted puede tomar medidas a tiempo para mantener sus riñones sanos:
- Elija alimentos bajos en sodio o con menos sal.
- Realice un chequeo frecuente de su presión arterial y verifique que se encuentre por debajo de 130/80.
- Piel anormalmente oscura o clara, dolor de huesos, somnolencia o problemas para concentrarse, entumecimiento o hinchazón en las manos y los pies, calambres, mal aliento, hipo frecuente, sed excesiva, dificultad para respirar, problemas de sueño y vómito con frecuencia en la mañana. Si usted padece diabetes, procure mantener los niveles de glucosa en la sangre bajo control
¿Cuáles son los síntomas?
Entre los primeros síntomas de la enfermedad renal crónica se encuentran:
- Inapetencia, sensación de malestar general o fatiga, dolor de cabeza, picazón, resequedad en la piel y pérdida de peso.
Los síntomas que se pueden presentar cuando la función renal ha empeorado son entre otros: Piel anormalmente oscura o clara, dolor de huesos, somnolencia o problemas para concentrarse, entumecimiento o hinchazón en las manos y los pies, calambres, mal aliento, hipo frecuente, sed excesiva, dificultad para respirar, problemas de sueño y vómito con frecuencia en la mañana.
